What is a credit report and how do you acquire it?

A credit report is a detailed breakdown of an individual’s credit history prepared by a credit bureau. Credit bureaus collect financial information about individuals and create credit reports based on that information, and lenders use the reports along with other details to determine loan applicants’ creditworthiness.
Who can request my credit report?
According to the FRCA, the following people and entities can request your credit report:
- Creditors and potential creditors (including credit card issuers and car loan lenders).
- Mortgage lenders.
- Landlords.
- Utility companies.
- Student loan lenders.
- Insurance companies.
- Car insurance companies.
- Employers.
Where can I get a free credit report?
You are entitled to a free credit report every 12 months from each of the three major consumer reporting companies (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion). How do I get my annual credit report?
By mail using the Annual Credit Report Request Form — it’ll be processed and mailed to you within 15 days of receipt of your request. It may take longer to get your report if the credit bureau needs more information to verify your identity. Can I get my report in Braille, large print, or audio format?
How much does it cost to get a credit report?
Once you’ve received your annual free credit report, you can still request additional reports. By law, a credit reporting company can charge no more than $12.50 for a credit report.
