Do credit card companies do a hard pull?
James Rogers
Each time you apply for a new credit card, your credit scores may go down—but only slightly. A hard pull, also known as a hard inquiry, is recorded in your credit file every time you authorize a lender to check your credit reports when applying for new credit—including for a credit card.
What happens if you have a credit card with a company that goes out of business?
If your card is closed because a retailer goes out of business — or due to your own inactivity — it will still appear on your credit report. And, depending on the number of cards you hold and the debt on each one, closing your store card can have a big impact on your credit-utilization rate.
How can I get my credit card companies to stop checking my credit?
You can place a credit freeze — which restricts access to your credit reports — on your account by contacting each of the three major credit bureaus: Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. The bureau you place the freeze with won’t contact the others, so you’ll need to contact all three credit bureaus yourself.
How many hard inquiries is bad?
Each lender typically has a limit of how many inquiries are acceptable. After that, they will not approve you, no matter what your credit score is. For many lenders, six inquiries are too many to be approved for a loan or bank card.
Will closing a store credit card hurt?
Store credit cards can either help or hurt your credit depending on your credit history, credit score and how you use the card. Be cautious about closing your retail card, however, as closing it will reduce your total credit limit and possibly increase your credit utilization ratio.
Can a credit card company do a hard pull?

What happens to my credit when I switch from one card to another?
If you select a different card from your current card issuer, some companies won’t check your credit at all. Others will do a soft check, which won’t affect your score. But with some card switches (and some issuers), there will be a “hard” credit check.
How can I get a company to pull my credit?
If you feel strongly about wanting such information for some reason, include a signature box in your standard application form that asks for a Social Security number and for permission to check the applicant’s credit. You might find yourself wanting to pull the credit of another company — perhaps a vendor or potential new client business.
Can a credit card company increase your credit limit without asking?
